Riley is a surname name which comes from Old English, meaning 'rye clearing'. It could also be considered a variant of the Irish Reilly whose meaning is unknown.
In North America Riley is more popular for girls but in the UK it is firmly the property of the boys. As I may have mentioned before I love surname names and think they have a very cool feel to them. I also tend to think of most surname names as feeling strongly masculine, but this is just personal preference as the majority of English surnames are gender neutral.
Riley is a fresh and modern sounding name that is backed up by history, meaning and substance - an excellent combination!
